Are Dogs Carnivores or Omnivores?

For many years, scientist, vet and dog lovers have debated whether Dogs are Carnivores or Omnivores .

Some said Dogs are definately carnivores because they cannot survive without meat. But veggie will argue, it is fine for Dogs to go on Vegetarain Dog Food. There is also a growing trend of commercial vegetarian dog food available in the market.

But whether Dogs should go for all-meats Diet or Veggie Diet is not important. What is important is to have a balanced diet. Since Evolution, Dogs are by nature omnivorous but they are adaptable animals and in the wild, they consume animal and plant-based food. It is possible for domestic pets to thrive on vegetarian diet but for work dogs it is best to go for a balanced meal.

A lot of Pet lovers relies on information in the Internet for the right Dog Food Diet. But taking the advice blindly is dangerous since the Information are always very mis-leading and some of these advice are not from authoritative source. In my view, your Vet is the best source of advice and in doubt always consult your family vet doctor. Utimately, different dogs have different diet requirement because not all breed are the same.

Commercial Dog Food Manufacturers have also slanted the factual information about dog food. And with all the Food Scandal recently, you will be shocked to know about Dog Food Secrets.

By-Products

Learn to read the Commercial Dog Food label next time when you are in the supermarket. As you come across those Commercial Dog Food, you will realise just how many manufacturers highlight the advertising statements as “No By-Products”.

But the definition of by-products as described by the official agency in the U.S, AAFCO is

By-Product… Secondary products produced in addition to the principal products.

Do you see a problem here? No?

Well, the actual fact by putting out the statement “No By-Products” does not indicate good or bad quality of product. This is pure advertising gimmick.

For example, if meat (skeletal) is the principal product then By-Products other than meat is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, stomachs and intestines etc.

Isn’t these By-products the most nourishing source for your pets? So shouldn’t Commercial Dog Food contains By-Products ?

If you still don’t get it. Good Luck to you.
